Environmental Management System (EMS) is a management framework by which an organization can manage in a comprehensive, systematic and documented manner, its environmental impacts. It’s a system that integrates a database, procedures and processes for monitoring, reporting on environmental performance as well as training the personnel. Most organizations adopt the ISO 14001 standard to develop their EMS. ISO 14001 is a voluntary standard that enable an organization to implement an EMS with the purpose of reducing its environmental footprint.

The major requirements of an EMS that meets the ISO-14001 standard include:

- A policy statement which includes commitments to prevention of pollution, continual improvement, and compliance with all applicable statutory and regulatory requirements;

- Identifying all aspects of the organization/ community activities, products, and services that could have a significant impact on the environment;

- Setting performance objectives which link back to the commitments in the policy and establishing the metrics by which the objectives are measured;

- Monitoring and reporting on emissions and waste releases, as well as on energy and water use and the risks associated with the use of chemicals;

Establishing a program to periodically audit the operation of the EMS and taking preventive and corrective actions when deviations from the EMS occur
